CLEP for Free?!?!

OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO EARN FREE COLLEGE CREDIT

A new, high-quality path to free college credit was launched in 2017. The goal of the program, dubbed “Freshman Year for Free,” is to make college more accessible and affordable for high school students, college students and adult learners, including active duty military personnel, their families, and veterans.

WHY PARTICIPATE?

This is the first time there have been courses (see list below) taught by top quality college professors for CLEP subjects. Also, Modern States is paying the $90 test fee ($93 Effective July 1, 2023) and scheduling fee for students who enroll in the courses and take the exams. The benefit for participating institutions is that this creates a free on-ramp to college that facilitates learning and earning credits.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Modern States Education Alliance™ offers free, high-quality online courses taught by college professors that prepare you for virtually all of the major AP and CLEP exams, which are well-established and widely-accepted. Solid performance on the exams (each participating college decides what scores you need for credit) can earn you college credits and enable you to save tuition dollars. You can take one course or many; if you do well on eight exams, you can potentially earn Freshman Year for Free™.

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) gives students an opportunity to demonstrate prior learning and to earn credit for that knowledge. That means that high-achieving students can use the CLEP program to move past introductory-level courses and on to more advanced and challenging course work.

CLEP offers 34 exams. They cover courses in the disciplines of business, composition and literature, foreign languages, history and social sciences, and science and mathematics. See "CLEP FAQ" heading below to find a link to see CIU's course equivalents for specific CLEP exams.

A maximum of 30 credits of standardized test credit (including CLEP) may be earned toward a bachelor’s degree.

There are several advantages to the CLEP:

Students can overcome time and financial obstacles by taking CLEP exams. Many students view CLEP as a kind of scholarship that allows them to save time and money.

  • Students can move to higher-level course work more quickly and make the most of the college experience.
  • Computerized test delivery allows students to take CLEP exams on demand and provides instant scoring.

Students should contact their advisor to determine if they are a good candidate for CLEP. Contact the Academic Success Center at academicsuccess@ciu.edu for more information or to register for CLEP exams.

At-Home CLEP Exam

We’re excited to announce that at-home CLEP exams with remote proctoring are now available. Remote proctoring allows students to take an exam online while a
human proctor monitors them via video.

At-home exams will be administered by Proctortack, CLEP’s remote proctoring partner that specializes in verifying the identity of online test-takers while detecting and deterring academic misconduct. Proctortrack will serve as the sole provider of remote-proctored CLEP exams to ensure consistency in registration, scheduling, and administration in a secure online environment.

At-Home CLEP Exam Requirements

Eligibility

To be eligible for remote proctoring, students must be:

13 years old or older and located in the U.S.
OR

DANTES-funded*
*Please note DANTES-funded candidates can register now for
remote-proctored exams but won’t be able to schedule their at-home exam
appointment until mid-May. If a DANTES-funded test taker needs to take their
exam before mid-May, we recommend they schedule their exam with a CLEP test
center.

Equipment and Environment

Students must have a PC computer or laptop (no Macs), an internal/external speaker and microphone, a camera, and, if taking notes during the exam, a white board with a dry erase marker or one transparent sheet protector with a dry erase marker. They must also be alone in a private room.

View the detailed list of requirements.

How to Sign Up

Students can take any of the 34 CLEP exams at home. At-home exams will contain the same questions, format, and timing as exams taken at a CLEP test center.

To register, students must log in to the CLEP My Account Registration Portal and
follow the steps to sign up for a CLEP exam. When they reach the Preferred Test
Center section, students can select at home with remote proctoring as their preferred test center and will be charged a $30 remote proctoring fee at checkout along with the $90 exam fee ($93 Effective July 1, 2023).

If students need accommodations for their at-home exam, they must first receive
approval from College Board to complete their registration. To submit a request,
students must complete this form.

After registration is complete, the student will receive a confirmation email from
CLEP with instructions on how to create an account and schedule their at-home
exam appointment with Proctortrack.

To learn more, visit the At-Home CLEP Exams page.
