Who We Are

The CIU IT Helpdesk, located in our main location in the Library, as well as a secondary location in the Business and IT Center at the front of campus, is here to provide you with tools that will assist you in getting the most out of our technology at CIU. We are the primary support desk for student technology issues.  We hope you find these resources and services helpful and accessible. If you need assistance, please visit the IT Support Page here on MyCIU, stop by the Helpdesk on the 1st floor of the Library in the "fishbowl" or call us at (803) 807-5199.

Student ID Cards

All ID cards are made by the Helpdesk, and are used to access the dorms and printers.  Students also use them to sign into chapel, eat at the dining facility as well as other various uses around campus.

Students will receive their first ID card during check-in, but can visit the IT Helpdesk anytime it is open to receive an initial or replacement card if necessary.

The first ID card is free of charge, but all subsequent ID cards due to damage or loss will be charged to the student at $10 per card.  You will not be assessed a fee if your card malfunctions outside of your control.  If you lose your card, please see the Helpdesk immediately so that we can prevent someone from using your card and accessing the dorms.

All computers require login: students enrolled in classes use their unique MyCIU username and password to login.

Students may also sign out a laptop for use in the Library by visiting RAM Tech.  There is a multi-function printer/copier available in the Library for printing and copying in color or black and white or scanning.

All guests and alumni are beholden to the IT policies listed in the Student Technology Handbook.  Guests and visitors will be denied access to the Computer Lab resources and services for any of the following reasons:

  • Refusal to abide by lab rules
  • Refusal to comply with IT staff directions or in the event lab seats are not available for current students

Student Computing Labs in the residence halls, Founders and Memorial, are provided only for the use of students currently enrolled CIU.

Personal Computers

Please refer to the Internet Access section below if you wish to connect personal computers to our university network.

ResNet: CIU's Public Internet Access

Students, alumni, and guests may connect their personal computers, tablets, and smartphones to CIU's high speed internet access network called ResNet.  Wireless internet is available in every building on campus.  Residence halls also have wired outlets in the rooms for physical connections if necessary.

How to connect

  • In the residence halls, simply connect your computer to one of the wired outlets in your room using an Ethernet cable.
  • For wireless access, look for and connect to the CIUWifi wireless network.  For dorm residents located outside of the main hallway, an individual wireless access point is available for semester long checkout at RAM Tech, located in the Library.

Your computer must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Windows XP or later, or Mac OS X 10.3 or later
  • At least 10mpbs Wired Ethernet, or 802.11b or g Wireless card
